CHICAGO!

Spent another weekend in awesome Chicago with awesome adamselzer. The weather was still cooler than I would have liked (but much better than the 2º F foolishness that was going on the last time I was there), but I had a good time anyway. I got to eat Chicago-style hotdogs and duck fat fries at Hot Doug’s, I went on Ken’s Weird Chicago tour (I’d only been on Adam’s prior, and it was when it was brand new), got freaked the hell out in the Liar’s Club (I feel like I got freaked out in there the first time), ran into Hector from the Chicago Hauntings tour—first at Ft. Dearborn (in all fairness, Adam and I did stage that) and also at the site of the Eastland Disaster—and well, had a great time all weekend, really.

I got time to act like a total tourist and to take lots of pictures, so here goes:

CHICAGO! (Pictures)

I promised you guys a recap with pictures, and I don’t like breaking my promises.

Just so you know, this is totally out of order and random. So here goes. 🙂

On my flight out to Chicago, there were some snafus. Firstly, there were tons of people going into O’Hare for some reason, so they asked us to reroute. But the pilot wasn’t sure we had enough fuel. So that possibly a delay (we were already 30 minutes late). This is the face I made when I heard that news:

Moof

We had enough fuel to take the reroute. But when someone asked the flight attendant if they were SURE, the flight attendant answered “I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out!”

That’s SUCH a Southwest Airlines response!

But, I eventually made it there. The flight was scheduled to land at 6:15pm CST, and I landed at 6:30pm CST, so it worked out because the reroute ended up being quicker.

I spent several days and nights in Chicago. It was balls-freezing cold, but I enjoyed it anyway. I ate well, got a lot of exercise (let me tell you how hard it is to walk through 12 inches of snow, especially unshoveled!), and hung out with a lot of great people: adamselzer, saintscribble, jebbyk, ralinad, projectlost1 just to name a few, and of course, the awesome Mr. Mike Smith, who so graciously went along on a journey to Hot Doug’s for my first Chicago-style hotdog, which was THE BOMB.

Chicago-y Food at Hot Doug's

The line for this place wound around the block. It was freezing outside. I’d trudged through lots of snow to get here. I really did walk uphill in the freezing cold and snow to get there.

It was SO worth it.

On the left—The Dog. An all-beef hot dog with a bit of a snap to it, tomatoes, relish, mustard, celery salt, and a pickle, all on a poppy seed bun. There are supposed to be onions but you know I asked that those be held. I also didn’t get the sport peppers, which you really aren’t supposed to eat anyway. You’re supposed to throw them at cars.

OMGz THE YUMMERZ!!!!!! It was my first Chicago-style hotdog, will NOT be my last by any means.

On the right—Smoked Chicken Cordon Bleu Sausage with Apple Ale Mustard and Applewood-Smoked Cheddar Cheese. Interesting flavors. It was okay, no where near as good as The Dog, though. Mmmmm.

On the very far right—duck fat fries. Only available Saturdays and Sundays. Mmmmm.

A blizzard hit the city on Tuesday, which made trudging through the snow to find adamselzer‘s newly released book a challenge. It was that stinging snow, too. The kind that hurts when it hits your face. Yow.

Among the other things I did: took the Metra train out to Naperville to attend the Children’s Literature Breakfast. I’m glad I went because not only were there ace donuts, but I got a bag of free stuff, and I was surrounded by authors, some who said they’d tried submitting up to ten agented manuscripts before they finally sold. I immediately stopped being so hard on myself and felt compelled and ready to get back in the game. In addition, I got to hear best-selling author Brian Selznick speak, who wrote the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret which is pretty much like an epic novel if I’ve ever seen one.

The weird part was that at the Metra station, you wait by the tracks for your train to come, of course. There are these speakers with this weird, haunting voice: track number six, track number ten, track number eight. They say it over and over and let me tell you, at 6:15am, that’s CREEPY.

A huge group of people celebrated jebbyk‘s 30th birthday at a fancy restaurant called Marche. I didn’t eat much, BELIEVE ME. Anyway, Jen looked stunning:

Of course, there was Adam’s book signing:

A snowy sidewalk:

Snow in Chicago

And goood memories all around. I can’t wait to go back, when it’s warmer, and take more pictures. I saw many gorgeous opportunities, but it was just tooo dang cold. However, ralinad is an AWESOME photographer, and he got some beautiful pictures despite the chill in the air, so check out his LJ or his flickr pages.

And yup, that was my trip. In a nutshell of sorts.

Eventually, I’d like to post a video from Adam’s book reading/signing, but I’m having computer drama at the moment. Seems as though all of my USB ports have been disabled for some reason.

Later.

Philly & Stuff

Just to start off with something kinda silly:

Got at b3co.com!

WHAT? I’ve only ridden THREE? This means I need to TRAVEL more. I mean, okay, I did just have a sweet ass one-day trip to Philadelphia (more on that later), but you know me. Perpetual wanderlust. Chicago in February, here I come. I’ve been invited to Atlanta for New Year’s (not sure if I’ll be able to afford that, though).

Oh yes, how could I FORGET all the years I’ve ridden the lovely (not) COTA of Columbus, Ohio? But they don’t have COTA on their nifty little site, so yeah. Never mind, then.

This weekend, I went to Philadelphia partly to catch a Bob Dylan concert and partly to hang out with adamselzer and other friends who enjoy Bob as well. And also, to satisfy some wanderlust, of course. It was cheap, so WHY NOT, right?

I wasn’t sure what to expect, actually. All I know is that I felt pretty brave. My flight landed 30 minutes early! That was a good thing because I had to figure out how to catch the train into the city. THAT part wasn’t hard. The hard part was getting the damn changer to take my money! See, their ticket machines does not accept the new bills, and of course, that’s all I had. There was a change machine next to it, and the stupid thing wouldn’t take my money because there was a fold in the bill. Back up the stairs I went to the ATM to take out a nice, crisp $10 bill (because the other one just wasn’t crisp enough even though it had just come from an ATM, too), and the damn machine finally took it. I ended up with all sorts of $1 coins, some of which I used to pay the $5.50 train fare.

The train showed up and off stepped a conductor, dressed in a conductor’s uniform. He was very patient, answering the repetitve questions of us tourists, but teasing us and saying that only the FIRST question was free. The next would be one million dollars! Just as the train was about to pull off, the conductor shouted “ALL ABOARD!” It was so neat.

Took the train to Center City, a huge convention center that was right by Chinatown, where Adam’s bus would be stopping. We finally found each other and then met up with Adam’s friend Peter Stone Brown, who drove us to the arena to get tickets for the BOB SHOW.

Then there were hiccups. First, they made Pete pay $10 just to park for the box office. The line at the box office was long and SLOW. Come to find out that there was a Cirque de Soleil show going on, that had just begun, and they were only serving customers who were buying tickets for that. They told us to leave. We left. Pete did get his $10 back. Tried to find tickets at Pete’s place on the internet. Bad seats only. Decided to try later. We all walked to the store so Adam could get money and I could get FOOD. I hadn’t eaten all day and was starting to feel faint. We went back, played some Dylan music, and ate lots of snacks. Peter’s an amazing storyteller, and he’s been to over 100 Bob Shows.

More Bob fans showed up, and we headed to get food and then took the subway the arena. By this time, there were no more tickets for sale on the internet. Adam still needed two–one for me, one for him. He yelled it out at JUST the right time, as a guy turned around and said “You need two? I got two.” Now, Adam is a seasoned Dylan-concertgoer himself, so he looked at the seats, and was kind of hedging on buying them. I told him it was up to him. Another guy told him to give them to us. GiVE THEM. “Merry Christmas,” he said. “Enjoy the show!” FREE TICKETS!!! FREE TICKETS! And the seats were great. Lower level, row 9. “Bob bless you,” Adam yelled to the guys as they were walking away. “Bob knows all, Bob sees all. He wouldn’t let us miss a show.”

Bob Dylan started off with a live premier: The Levee’s Gonna Break. My second Dylan concert ever and I got a live premier. Woo!!

Sixteen song set and every one was right on. Again, I loved “Highway 61 Revisted,” “All Along the Watchtower,” and well, everything. I even put up with that “Spirit On The Water” song I’m not fond of. Heh.

The Racounteers opened and they rocked as well. There were old people in the front row who were head banging like crazy.

The only bad thing about the show was the number of people who wouldn’t sit the hell down and shut the eff up. UGH. They were annoying! I’m like “WHY COME TO A CONCERT AND LEAVE 38947985 TIMES DURING THE SHOW??” What the fresh hell are you thinking??? Do you really need a beer RIGHT NOW???? UGH.

The encores of the 21st century don’t really consist of lighters anymore. Oh no, it’s the glow of cell phones now. Prettier and safer, too. I like it. Although a few people did have lighters and they took advantage of the darkness to light cigarettes. Ew. That took a bit of the fun away from the encore. 🙁

The consensus after the show, for all of us who were there and had met up again, was that this was one of the BEST EVER. And I was there. YEAH!!!

Today consisted of breakfast at a yummy diner/bakery, and then some quick sight-seeing. Pete took us to West Philly, where Adam freaked out over the gorgeous Victorian homes and the Charles Dickens statue in the park. He was happy. I also saw Independence Square, the Liberty Bell (which is a lot smaller than I thought it’d be), and lots of horse-drawn carriages. It’s a beautiful part of the city. There was really no time to stop and take pictures, and I didn’t have my camera on me anyway, so I suppose I’ll have to go back sometime.

Darn.

LOL.

Airport adventures were interesting. Southwest let me take a HUGE bag of 3 oz or smaller liquids through yesterday, but since Adam’s flight was leaving earlier than mine, I went through the AA checkpoint with him so we could hang out til it was time for him to board his plane. They made me take everything out of my bag, saying it was too big, and since Adam didn’t have any toiletries, gave him some of my stuff in a smaller bag and gave me the rest. THEN Adam beeped going through security and had to get searched. But once I’d gotten inside, I didn’t have to go through anymore security once I headed to my own terminal. So I was able to take all the stuff he was holding and put it back in my bag with no problems.

I found out, at least at Philadelphia International, that as long as you have a boarding pass, it didn’t matter which airline or terminal you were supposed to go to, that you can go to any checkpoint and get checked and wait with people. Pretty cool, huh? Surprising, that’s for sure, with all the security restrictions and things these days.

The Burger King at the airport had a broken broiler, so no flame-broiled Whopper, Jr. for me. I had to go with the corned beast sammich I’d originally purchased. And those airport shops are dangerous little tempting traps when you have a lot of money (I ended up spending WAY less that I’d anticipated!) and time to kill before your flight takes off. The Hallmark trapped me, and of course I got a little something for Aidan. 🙂

So, Philly was fun enough. Very interesting experiences, very good food, and of course, the Bob Show was amazing. I had a really good time.

Did you know that today is the 143rd anniversary of the Gettysburg Address? I’ll bet you didn’t. And man, is it already nearly 8pm? Wow does time fly, even when your plane lands 25 minutes ahead of schedule.

But this is a short week! Three days, then FOOD FOOD FOOD! And I plan to start my Christmas shopping! I do, I do, I do! 🙂 YAY. But you know, even though I’m starting to hear Christmas music in some stores and see decorations here and there, it doesn’t really FEEL Christmasy yet. Strange for me, right? I mean, I am always ready in October. But now I’m like “Oh crap. It’s gonna be here before I know it, then little Aidan’s birthday too!” Time is flying.

I think that’s all for now. Til next time!

CHICAGO!!! :D (Pictures)

Scandalous Princesses

Yo ho yo ho!! I’m back from Chicago!! Had an absolutely AMAZING time. That city is simply unbelievable, with mostly friendly people, things to do and see, things to EAT. Oh my gosh. Some of the aromas wafting through the air while walking down the block–so yummy. Freshly baking bread. Pizza everywhere. Mmmmmm.

Got to hang out with quality people while there. Spent some time with the awesome Adam (adamselzer) and Jen*Jen (jebbyk–but don’t bother to go to her journal because she never uses it), ate some really good food (Pie-Eyed Pizza, a neat candy/ice cream shop to name a couple of places)… DUDE, I TRIED THAI FOOD for the first time ever! It was so good. I went easy, got the Pad Thai. I mean, what could be so scary about noodles and beef, right? It was delicious.

Pad Thai

Highlights:
– Southwest Airline Flight Attendant: Thank you for flying Southwest. Now get out.
– Seeing Who Framed Roger Rabbit at The Music Box. The Music Box is a beautiful theatre. Here is Bizzy and me clowing around in the lobby before hand:

Bizzy and Me

– The cab ride after Roger Rabbit. Apparently Chicago cabbies are insane. They don’t speak much English, but they do have the cuss words down. One memorable thing the cab driver blurted: Learn how drive, mother fuck!
SEEING JEN!!! Spending time, catching up, drinking wine (goooood wine) and taking pictures while wearing tiaras.
– The Ghost Tour. Always a good time. We were wild and crazy! Adam was great as a tour guide. The last time I went on a tour, he was tag-teaming it, but this time, he was solo. Good times.
Woooo!

– Tried Stout. Liked it. The first beer I’ve ever actually liked. It’s a miracle, I say!
– FOOD! Pie-Eyed Pizza! Goood coffee and hot chocolate.
– Wearing a tiara during the ghost tour. While nicely buzzing. Then heckling the tour guide. 😉
– Old Town Arts Fair. Yummmy food. I had a boneless BBQ rib sammich. Yummm.
– Corned beef sandwhich from a shop in the airport. Sooo good.
– Finishing CRUSH! Came in at over 50,000 words. WHEW!! 😀

Lowlights:
– Bizzy losing her camera. 🙁 BUT, this story has a happy ending! Jen, Bizzy, and I had to backtrack (a LOT of walking, mind you), search all the stores we’d been in. The last store we had left to check… wait for it… HAD THE CAMERA! Some nice person had just turned it in! Let me tell you how awesome Chicago tends to be in that regard. People there are generally nicer and friendlier than in Ohio.
– Getting yelled at by some PRICK in some stupid thrift shop for taking photos. Okay, firstly, I had no idea that I wasn’t allowed to take photos (and seriously, wtf kind of rule is that anyway?), secondly, HE WAS A PRICK. He didn’t ask me nicely, he screamed it at me. So I was done in the store. I really wish I’d had some merchandise to throw down to the ground. Asshole. Anyway, I got a picture of the stuff anyway. I’m sorry, it was a terrible error and I had to document it. And this picture was taken before the asshole yelled at me:

WTF??
See the error?

– The BROWN LINE being delayed! Sooo delayed!!! Ack!
– No orbage action on the ghost tour so much this time around. 🙁
– Flights back to Columbus being delayed like WHOA.
– Time went WAY too quickly. The weekend sped by.

Scandals:
– Bizzy and I using the bathroom together not once, but TWICE.
– Being hit on outside The Clark Bar.
– Bizzy scandalizing random statues and sculptures:

Come here, loverboy...

– Bizzy scandalizing ME:
Happy Strawberry

Click here for more (not necessarily scandalous) pics.

Okay, I’m falling asleep here, so I’m gonna go. But yeah… Chicago was an amazing time. It went way too quicly.

‘Til next time!

Big Update!! (Pictures)

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a proper update. I’ve been busy, or out of town, or some combination of the two. Good times, great oldies, right? 🙂

On May 9 – I went to Kenneth’s and saw Cameron (code word for “I got my hair done by the best hairdresser ever”). I love my hairdresser. He’s the cutest thing ever and sooo funny. I love talking to him. Plus, he did a supurb job on my hair:

New Hair Again
This is even after it was windblown! 🙂

May 10 – took an insanely early flight and got to Vegas a bit after 9am. Didn’t check in to the Monte Carlo until a lot later, though. Visited the most ghastly Wal*mart ever. Ugh. I hate that store even more now, even though they have cute dresses. Finally checked in, got a bit settled (meaning: hooked up the internet and checked email), then headed out to the Strip. Saw the Bellagio fountains, ate good food, went to M&M World, shopped a bit. Ate dinner, then headed back out. Bellagio fountains and Paris Eifel Tower at night oh lovely….
